What is your immune system?
The immune system is an amazing but complex defense network evolved over millions of years. It is made up of a collection of structures and processes including proteins which change shape to protect the body against diseases and other potentially damaging foreign bodies.
Innate immunity Everyone is born with innate (natural) immunity.
Adaptive immunity Develops throughout life.
How massage can help your immune system.
Jeff Smoot, 2015 president of the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) said:
“Researchers working with patients with compromised immune systems have found massage therapy can improve how the immune system functions.”
Massage can help to increase the activity level of the body’s white blood cells (lymphocytes) that work to combat viruses. Regular massage has shown in studies to make the immune system stronger.
How reflexology can help your immune system.
Reflexology, a gentle treatment using pressure points on the feet can help to maintain a healthy immune system by reducing stress and tension throughout the body therefore improving lymph and blood circulation and releasing toxins.
The circulation of the lymphatic fluid is based on our breathing (this will be discussed in a future article) and other body movements. Lymphatic drainage is our body’s natural cleansing system. Lymph nodes or glands work mainly as filters helping to remove bacteria, viruses, toxins including dead skin cells and excess water. This helps to protect our bodies against diseases and infections and also helps boost our immune system.
Regular reflexology, especially for those spending long periods sitting down, is one of the best gifts you can give yourself to enhance and maintain general well being and relaxation.
